To all appearances, this is nothing more than a small piece of board with a simple clip, to hold a piece of paper. Yet it's cleverly gimmicked, allowing you to see what has been written down.
Your volunteer is given a small clipboard and a ballpoint pen and is asked to write down a word or draw a simple object, on the paper. The volunteer removes the paper for safekeeping and hands the clipboard back. By the time you've dropped it in you know the volunteer's word or picture. The rest is just presentation, as you take a pad and reproduce the word or picture.
The presentation possibilities for this prop are endless. Have a spectator write down a person's name, or that of their mother, or aunt .. anything you couldn't normally know; the amount of change in a purse, a driving license number, the date of a birth or wedding anniversary, all make good presentation topics. Have someone think of an animal, bird or object, or a place they went on holiday to. Have fun by asking them to hide an object and then write it down 'for safe keeping'. Kids can produce simple drawings, a house, bird, chair, or shapes like a triangle or cross.
Why stop at one person? Have two, three or even half a dozen spectators participate in a mind-reading routine, each person writing something different.
A church worker can use this in any message. Ask a volunteer to write down a word linked to the talk. e.g. a name from the Bible, a book of the Bible, a keyword, a verse or chapter number.
Remember this is all in the presentation. Add to the drama of the reveal by building up the outcome, for example if the word is yellow you could take your time trying to visualise the word then say, "I'm thinking sunny days, daffodils, sandy beaches, I can smell something...it smells like lemons...yes is it...yellow?"
