It's essential that a mentalist props look as inconspicuous and everyday as possible. To all appearances this is nothing more than a small piece of board with a simple clip, to hold a piece of paper. Yet it is cleverly gimmicked, allowing you to see what has been written down, making it an invaluable mentalist's aid.
EFFECT
The volunteer is given a small clip board and a ball point pen and is asked to write down a word or draw a simple object, on the paper.
After the writing is done, the volunteer removes the paper for safe keeping. You take the clip board and pen and turn back to your prop box or bag. By the time you've dropped it in you know the volunteer's word or picture.
The rest is just presentation, as you take a pad and reproduce the word or picture.
PERFORMANCE IDEAS
This clip board is limited only by your imagination, you can have almost anything on the card and instantly know what it is. For example, a shape, animal, word, celebrity, favourite food, symbol, a date, a number, birthday, place of birth or the name of a person special to your volunteer
GOSPEL IDEAS
Use to support ANY message by having a volunteer write down a word linked to the talk. e.g. a name from the Bible, a book of the Bible, a key word, a verse or chapter number.
If you know your bible well, you can have the volunteer choose a particular book from the bible - secretly find out what they've chosen - then instead of just saying the word, turn to that book and have them read out the title. It matches!
We're sure you will think of many other things that could be written or drawn too, and your routine can be adapted to a wide variety of themes and situations.
GAG
Ask for the volunteer's pin number, sort code and account number! (no, not really but you might want to jokingly ask them for these details first, if that suits your performing style!)
PRO TIPS
You can add to the drama of the reveal by building up the outcome, for example if the word is yellow you could take your time trying to visualise the word then say "I'm thinking sunny days, daffodils, sandy beaches, I can smell something...it smells like lemons...yes is it...yellow?"
