Product Description
The Greek Philosopher Pythagoras was a bit of a joker. If you got too greedy and overfilled your cup, it automatically emptied, wine pouring out of the base and onto you and the floor!
We discovered these Pythagorean cups while on holiday on the Greek Island of Naxos. We saw one demonstrated in a village pottery and knew we'd discovered something very special.
Each handmade cup works normally until the drinker gets too greedy. Overfill the cup, and WHOOSH! the cup empties itself, wine gushing out from the hole in the base.
Called the Greedy Cup and the Cup of Justice, its invention is attributed to the 6th Century BC Greek mathematician and scientist Pythagoras. Self-working, and instantly repeatable, it has the advantage of looking like a normal cup. It's a prop you'll be proud to use and display in your magic den. Audiences love magic with liquids, but remember to perform it over a bowl, tray or folded towel.
Professional performers can present this as a gag, a practical joke and a fun illustration of a scientific principle. Church workers can use the effect as a fun illustration for the many different biblical verses and stories that mention greed and cups, for example:
- Parable of the Rich Fool (Luke 12:13-21) The Rich Man wanted to keep the surplus to himself but had it all taken away
- The Overflow of the Heart (Luke 6:45) What we say flows from our hearts, just as the contents of this cup overflow.
- The Last Supper - The blood of Christ is freely available to all.
