EFFECT
The nail is confirmed as being solid and very sharp. It's pushed through a hole in a wooden base, and placed point up into one of four identical paper bags. Each bag is sealed and mixed, so nobody knows where the nail is hidden.
An audience member selects one bag and, to everyone astonishment, you SLAM your hand down on it, crushing it flat! Are you crazy? You repeat this with a second and third bag, each time the tension building, until only one bag is left. It's opened and the nail is taken out. You live to fight another day!
GOSPEL PRESENTATION
The Nail Game is a compelling (and unforgettable) illustration of both Jesus' crucifixion and God's protection.
Pierced for our Transgressions:
Use three bags. Recount how Jesus was arrested, put on trial, beaten and was then crucified. As you insert the nail into the base say, 'Three nails like this were hammered into his hand and his feet.' The unit is put into one of the bags which is sealed. 'Jesus fate was sealed.'
The bags are mixed up as you ask the question, 'Why did God allow his only Son to die this way? The answer is found in Isaiah 53'. As you recite these verses you slam your hand down twice for emphasis, each time crushing a bag.
'He took on our infirmities and carried our sorrows; yet we considered Him stricken by God, struck down and afflicted. (SLAM!). But He was pierced for our transgressions, He was crushed for our iniquities; (SLAM!) the punishment that brought us peace was upon Him, and by His stripes we are healed.' Open the last bag and take out the nail. 'When Jesus was nailed to the cross, he carried the sins of mankind, both yours and mine. He died and suffered in our place.'
Valley of the Shadow of Death:
Nail Game is a very powerful illustration of God leading us safely through danger. Place the nail and base into one of four bags, seal and mix the bags up. Recite Psalm 23, slamming your hand down three times throughout the Psalm for emphasis. 'Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me.' (SLAM).
When you come to the last verse open up the fourth bag and take out the nail as you say 'Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life.'
