The wilting flower is one of those beloved bits of business used by children’s entertainers, clowns and magicians all over the world. Why? Because it works! It’s the ‘magician in trouble’ scenario that gets lots of laughs and audience interaction, a perfect warm-up to let your audience know that it’s okay to join in!
The magician holds a bright yellow bunch of sunflowers. Lovely! But when he’s not looking, the stem wilts and the flower heads droop. It sounds simple, but this is the kind of gag that gets children screaming and shouting. And of course it takes you a while to notice anything is wrong! A tweak of the steam and the flowers are fixed. Then you can repeat the gag a few times before having the children help to fix it once and for all.

Presentation Ideas:
Use the flowers to take a bow, bowing with you as you lean forward at the end of an effect. It’s ideal with a puppet as you can operate the gimmick single-handed. A naughty bird puppet for example, can appear to peck at the stem, causing it to snap. It’s a good job you’re a magician though, as you can magically fix it…until the puppet does it again!
Gospel Ideas
Can be used all year round but is ideal for Easter shows in particular, with the theme of springtime, new life and so on. Did you know that the sunflower is a symbol of faith? On Father's Day, explain that you've bought some flowers for the dads. 'Oh dear they've wilted. Can a dad come out and water it with the invisible watering can?' Then lead into the fact that all dads can 'wilt' at times under life's pressures and we need God's invisible help.
Dan’s bonus gag – When the flower rises up, you can remark…”Hmm, it’s ‘self-raising flower!’ (Dan uses a similar drooping flower effect in most of his shows, and it never fails to get laughs and cheers of excitement!)
